College majors that boost your paycheck

Academics Engineering and computer majors have the highest starting salaries.

"I think it's a national trend." -Sharon Masaniello, assistant director of New York University's Office of Career Services

According to the National Association of Colleges & Employers' (NACE) summer 2005 salary survey, the top seven majors with the highest starting salaries are all applied sciences.

The top ten are:

  1. Chemical engineering: $53,813
  2. Computer engineering: $52,464
  3. Electrical engineering: $51,888
  4. Aerospace engineering: $50,993
  5. Systems engineering: $50,887
  6. Computer science: $50,820
  7. Mechanical engineering: $50,236
  8. Industrial engineering: $49,567
  9. Engineering technology: $45,234
  10. Information sciences: $44,775
The remainder of the list was made up of accounting ($43,003), sales ($37,269), management trainee ($36,491), and teaching ($30,793).

The salaries are on the rise, as well. The biggest gain was made in industrial enginieering with starting salary offers increasing by 7.7 percent. Sales saw a 6.3 percent increase, aerospace engineers 6.2 percent, and accounting 6.1 percent.

Sharon Masaniello, assistant director of New York University's Office of Career Services said that prospects look even better for 2006 graduates.

"We're already starting to see more activity and I think it's a national trend," said Masaniello. "The economy is getting better, so it makes sense." In addition to the "hot" fields of engineering, technology and financial services, Masaniello said they are seeing a pick up in the advertising profession and in companies hiring across departments, not just in the growth divisions.
