| NACE 2009 Salary Survey |
As reported by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), the college Class of 2009 fared well in a poor job market, and basically held ground with its overall average starting salary offer. NACE’s Summer 2009 Salary Survey report shows that the average starting salary offer for new college graduates now stands at $49,307, approximately 1 percent less than the average for 2008 graduates. The engineering graduates benefited from the highest salary increase. Overall, their average offer increased by 3.7 percent to $59,254. Graduates with bachelor’s degrees in the business disciplines had an average increase in starting salary offers of less than 1.0 percent. Accounting majors fared better than the average with a 1.9 percent increase. Finance and marketing graduates fared well in comparison with a 2.9 and 3.0 percent increase respectively. Liberal arts graduates had an average decrease of less than 1.0 percent from 2008, with psychology majors posting a 2.1 percent increase. History and English majors also increased 1.7 and 1.1 percent respectively; however, sociology majors fell 4.4 percent. Computer science related fields (including system analysts, programmers, and information scientists) as a whole saw a 5.0 percent drop in overall salary offers last Spring, but by Summer, the offers were up 1.9 percent. Decreases in starting salaries were seen for graduates with business administration majors with a drop of 2.1 percent, primarily due to the struggling retail/wholesale marketplace. Graduates with economic degrees also suffered a decrease of 1.3 percent in starting salaries. As reported by NACE, employers have been reluctant to make significant changes to starting salaries, even in this struggling economy. We will report on NACE’s Job Outlook 2010 Fall Preview in coming months. Based on the 2009 NACE Salary Survey, published this past summer, following is a list of the top ten starting salaries for graduates with the following degrees: 2. Computer engineering: $61,738 3. Computer Science: $61,407 4. Electrical engineering: $60, 125 5. Civil engineering: $52, 048 6. Finance: $49,940 7. Economics: $49,829 8. Accounting: $48,993 9. History: $37,861 10. English: $34,704
