The Beginning of My Artistry
Name: Rachel Waldmann
College Attending: Mepham High School

Learning principles of photography has undoubtedly allowed my interest in design to prosper. I am fascinated with how an image of commonplace objects or people can become so spectacular through design concepts.

Staring at pictures of random and rather insignificant objects (for instance, a cheese grater, a bowl of pasta, or a brick wall) in the Art Center of my school, I wondered how images of such ordinary scenes could make my mind run wild and spur a sprawling mass of thought processes. As I have learned through photographing similarly mundane and overlooked objects from everyday life, an image is what provokes attention and deliberation in the human mind.

Consequently, my love for design has flourished as I have experimented with my photography both in the darkroom and on Photoshop. I admire that color (or lack thereof), composition, shape, and various other design techniques are able to stimulate different perceptions of essentially anything a person views. This relates back to my love of photography again.

For instance, I have a picture of me when I was four years old hugging a doll that was my size. The image could cause the viewer to think of childhood and innocence. Needless to say, when I recently photographed the same doll in black and white with dramatic lighting, the viewer no longer sees a childhood friend; instead, he may see a bug-eyed, balding, and eerie-looking doll that can only be described as “from hell.” This particular example led me to the realization that simply changing the way something is lit or presented can entirely change its meaning in the viewer’s mind, as well as the viewer’s reaction.

I have always felt the craving to make people experience an emotion, to generate a reaction, to cause people to think about an idea, an object, or another being. And although I may not be a beautiful songwriter or a persuasive actress, I have always been a firm believer that through photography, I could achieve this. And while I do not view a photographer’s life as ideal for me, I am certain that my photography background is the root of my appreciation for design. I know that people walk through the world around them constantly. The question is: have they really seen it yet?
