| Go to School, Study Hard, Get a Scholarship |
|
Name: Alexandra Gerraputa College Attending: Massapequa High School “Go to school, study hard, get a scholarship.” The words my dad has said to me every morning as I scurry out of the car into school since my junior year. Before then, the words may not have always been those, but the message is always the same. Be responsible, challenge myself, others depend on me. This is how I have always tried to live my life. Academically I have done so. I study hard and challenge myself with AP classes and college courses. Athletically I have done the same. While I participated in track and tennis the one sport I have stuck with from as young as ten years of age and still to this day is basketball. My father has always been my coach so I have worked even harder at it. No one wants to disappoint their dad. He has always encouraged me to try my best and I have not dissatisfied him. In holding a job, my morals and ethics are the same. I have babysat for my neighbors and parents’ friends since I was twelve years old. I took a babysitting course through my local library to better educate myself in caring for children. Parents love me and so do the kids. When I turned sixteen, I joined the “on-the-books” employees, although I do not like FICA so much. I work at Wesco Sports pressing shirts. Going on the interview was nerve-racking, but just like every other aspect of my life I did not back away, I arrived early and I got the job. I wanted to impress my boss and show him that he had made the right choice of hiring me. I practiced real hard and soon I was a natural. I always arrive on time to work and do not slack off. No one is perfect, I did make mistakes and ruin a few shirts but I took responsibility for my errors and my boss respected that. One of the hardest moments in my career of working at Wesco Sports was asking for a raise. I did not know how I would approach him or what I would say. I felt like I deserved a raise because I was a hard worker and had been working there for almost a year. When it came time to ask, I built up my courage and requested my raise. With no hesitation, he rewarded me with a dollar raise. After that day, I realized that I was an excellent worker and should not be afraid to go after what I deserve. I discovered that challenging myself, taking responsibility for my actions and being dependable is very important in life. People will show you more respect if you are committed. I am now better prepared for my full time college career. I know the work will be difficult. I know I will be scared. I also know YOU will hold me accountable, YOU will challenge me, but YOU can depend on me.
