The Pebble Effect
Name: Leandra Falotico
College Attending: Mineola High School

Imagine taking a pebble and throwing it into a calm body of water. What could this tiny pebble possibly do to the large water body that seems to go on forever? At first, the pebble appears to be a miniscule element in the equation; however, once the pebble hits the water, it has an enormous impact. The water develops ripples that gradually grow in size and extend throughout the entire surface. In essence, a pebble hitting the water in one location will affect the water on a much greater scale than one could imagine.

The most important lesson that I have learned in life can be compared to the effect of the tiny pebble. That is, the smallest of actions will eventually have large effects on the people around us.  Throughout life, I have noticed that what may seem like a tiny gesture to someone can mean the world to someone else. Participating in acts of service can make a huge difference, and eventually cause the large ripples throughout the water. If everyone in our communities contributed to this “ripple” effect, we could ultimately experience positive changes in our society.

When someone asks me to donate some money to UNICEF, or help shovel snow, or give food to a food drive, I remember that it is the little things in life that count. It is the moments where complimenting someone or helping unload an elder’s groceries can lead others to look at the world in a positive light. The little gestures and acts of service that may seem small to one can have large impacts and influence others in positive ways. No act of service is ever too small or short to not be considered influential, because all moments spent for others can make a huge difference. If everyone contributed to their communities by making others’ lives easier, the ripples throughout the water will grow. All it takes is a small pebble.
