| ~Green Light Ahead for a Sustainable Future~ |
|
Name: Narine Wandrey College Attending: University of Texas Gleaming grasslands and steaming wetlands; lakes and tide pools that catch showers like cisterns for Earth’s cleansing downpours….Savannas and seas that nurture a diversity of life…. These are not just beautiful thoughts---they are the components of a planet and ecosystem that we must protect now so that we’re able to safeguard our most precious resources for later. Promoting research in science and engineering is a marvelous path we all should study and support, so that we can offer hope, answers, and alternatives for the challenges our 21st century world community faces. There are many choices we can make to promote a healthy and sustainable future. We need to consider each quadrant of our planet: the ocean’s sapphire depths and drifting sea ice covers millions of square miles of the polar ocean…Do scientists and engineers have their work cut out for them there? Absolutely! Geologists and specialists are finding new ways to determine climactic change that’s observable in our oceanic and polar regions. Marine researchers and climatology experts are expanding their knowledge base at breakneck speeds so that we can venture forward with hope and a viable vision for a sustainable future. Engineering specialists are exploring possibilities for energy resources that won’t deplete our planet. Corporations and businesses are beginning to learn that “what’s good for the earth” is good business sense. In our cities and urban living spaces, science is paving the way for a healthy, brave new world! Civil engineers and construction professionals are employing new techniques to minimize energy use; expand the use of more organic trends and products; and choose less toxic substances. Education and opportunity in areas that support responsible stewardship of our planet are in demand, and they all point to what each of us knows: we must think beyond green as just a trend. Our lives could depend on it. We might look to our tables and breadbaskets to see where science can offer a promise of the future. A rich diversity of foods; an abundance of plants and animals; and a landscape that’s fertile and strong all contribute to a healthy and vital way of life. Crop scientists and bioengineers are perfecting techniques of enhancing food supplies and improving the genetic health of agricultural resources. Making our grasslands and farms, our forests and harbors a significant and essential part our society’s healthy future is an important way science supports environmental responsibility for our community. We’re at a crossroads in our lives and every choice we make---individually and as a global society, has an impact on our future and the future of our children. A green light is illuminating our path into the future…..Are we seeing? Are we on course? I believe there’s no better way than using science to preserve the future for all of us.
