Here is my essay in its original form:
I can still remember the first time I ever saw the word engineer. It was eighth grade, and I was taking my first career placement test. Up until that point all I had ever thought about being was a pilot. My family was spread out over the country, and flying was something I did at least four times a year. I loved flying. I loved airplanes. I was sure that pilot would be the first result I would get, so you can imagine my surprise when my top five careers had a word in them I only knew to be a train driver, and pilot was way down the list at about 20th. After looking into it more and realizing just what an engineer did, however, I realized just how much I liked the idea of designing new technologies that people would use every day. Then I found out there was a career out there that combined just that and my original goal: aerospace engineer. I found that working to invent and innovate jets and helicopters was a much more desirable career choice to me than just flying the planes someone else had made. To me, being an engineer is about doing your part to help create a better, more advanced society for all humanity to live in. There’s nothing I would rather do with my life than play even the tiniest of roles in helping to further advance our world into the dreams of science fiction.
