| Pushing Limits |
|
Name: Rose Lucidi College Attending: Locust Valley High School I leaned over the edge of my driveway and “zoom!” there went another car. “Rose, don’t you leave this driveway!” my mother bellowed. I took my bike and rode back towards the house. My mom never let me go past the end of our driveway. The road was busy, there were no sidewalks and she had set strict limits for my safety; but I always wondered what I was missing. When I was in third grade, my family moved to a quiet town with a safer street. The day my mom told me I could take the bike around the block is forever engraved in my memory. My eyes lit up and I sprinted to get my bike from the garage. I swung the doors open, immediately taking my bike out and started peddling down the driveway. My feet hit the floor. I came to an immediate stop; with no clue what happened I started to look around for an answer.
Suddenly, the reason popped into my head. I was standing at the edge of my driveway and I was afraid to take the next step; to leave. The feeling from that day is one I will never forget. It was the fear of the unknown, because I didn’t know what to expect. But, I placed my feet back on the petals and slowly started moving out on to the street. As soon as the rubber from the tires hit the street, I was off, the wind in my hair and a smile from ear to ear. Before I knew it I was back at my house and my parents were waiting for me with open arms.
From that point on I’ve remembered never to let fear get in the way of what I want to accomplish. Pushing past limits has helped me find out who I truly am. Learning this important lesson at an early age has been extremely helpful throughout my life. I have tried out for soccer teams where I have known no one on the team; I have spoken in front of crowds for Athletes helping Athletes. Some of these risks may not always be the biggest or scariest risks, but they have all helped me grow. Now, I am part of one of the top soccer teams in the State. Speaking in front of crowds of children has made me consider the possibility of becoming a teacher. Every risk, no matter how big or small, brings a positive outcome.
Taking that big step out of the driveway and pushing my limits when I was younger was something I never imagined would have such a big impact on my life. Life itself presents many possibilities, as well as challenges en route to reaching for my dreams. I have learned that no matter what life throws at me, the only limitations I have are the ones placed on myself. |
