Name: Ashley O'Neill College Attending: Mineola High School I could probably name every single person in my grade, middle name and all. I have basically been with the same kids for all my life. I have not had the opportunity to experience real diversity, and attending college could change that. I only live 26 miles from what is commonly known as an international melting pot, NYC . Despite its close proximity I have not taken advantage of the different cultures that this city offers which is something I regret. I have only recently been to Chinatown and it was like entering a new world; a world unfamiliar to me, and there was something I liked about that. As I got excited over going to Chinatown, which is only a mimic of the real china, I realized the educational benefit of experiencing other cultures. My sisters had gotten real world experiences by studying abroad in different countries such as England, Spain, Germany and Greece. Those experiences empowered them with an awareness that can only uniquely be found by traveling beyond what is familiar. Attending a school with a different demographic would enable me to join a community that fosters cross-cultural involvement and that strongly promotes equity and versatility. I want new experiences, I want to explore different parts of the country and more importantly, different parts of the world. I look forward to the opportunity to interact with and develop an appreciation for the differences in each and every person while at the same time allowing others to experience my culture and what makes me unique. Colleges bring different nations of the world together and create an international atmosphere that I want to be a part of. |
