| Summer 2009 |
|
Name: Dillon Galvis College Attending: SUNY University at Buffalo The summer of 2009 is a summer I will never forget. The experience started due to my love art I have acquired from a young age and the compliments I have received for my artistice talents. Over the years I became interested in architecture, a field that incorporates my artistic ability and creativity. In high school I took an architectual development class, which also helped me gain experience in the field, but peaked my interest in it as well. Wanting to further pursue architecture, I searched for Pre-College programs in the field. During my search I found Pratt's Pre-College program, which included the major and a foundations class in the arts. After applying to the program, I later found out about an honorable scholarship for Latinos, and being of Columbian descent, I was eligable for applying. After months of anticipation, I found out that I was awarded the scholarship, which covored tuition and unexpectedly room and board. All my patience and hard work was appreciated allowing me to have an experience many people would desire. When the summer finally came, I was thrilled to start this new voyage in my life. Iwas excited to take classes in architecture and eager to learn what it takes to be a professional architect. Along with these exhilarating feelings, I also had numerous fears. One major fear was living with a roomate. Coming from a multicultural family made it easy to adapt to the other cultures I saw from countries such as Japan, Taiwan, Turkey and Spain. I also dreaded the criticism I would have to face from the professors at the university. There were also many anxieties I had about city living. like taking the subway and using a metro card. All of these rousing and frightening circumstances made me more excited to be part of this experience. My first classs project was to build an anima lout of wooden skewers. I thought to myself, what a strange project. This project took me over twelve hours to build and I was determined that my assignment would be the best. I spent the entire night building a coyote , thinking I did a great job. When the class critiqued our projects, my professor lined the projects in order of best to worst, and my project was last. I was shocked and upset, but learned that it would take even more hard work to be rewarded. After this project I was determined not only to do better, but to have the best work in class. Our last project was once again to use skewers, to build a hand. I worked for two full night on this project with the determination to make it the best. When I woke up I was excited to bring the new piece into the class. When the teacher came into the studio he looked at all the projects and I anxiously waited for him to put the projects in order. My final project was now the best in class. |
