Name: Kyrstin Topalian College Attending: H. Frank Carey High School As simple as it sounds, it is something of which all people are guilty. Books are judged by their cover, their length, and by the reviews of other people. People carry this judgment further than books and judge others based on their skin color, their size, their religion, and every other category one can imagine. People are judgmental. It’s human nature to cast one glance at something or someone and have an entire novel’s worth of opinions before one has the opportunity truly to know the important things. These aren’t the outside covers, or the opinions of others; the important things are on the inside. My Uncle John is one of the kindest people I know. He is a strong athlete, a hard worker, and an all around good person. He was born with Down syndrome, a genetic disorder where a person is born with one extra chromosome. The physical appearance of a person with Down syndrome is widely recognized. My Uncle John is judged based on his appearance. People assume automatically that he doesn’t know anything, and they treat him differently because of that. It saddens me greatly to see this happen with someone so dear to me. It has taken me a long time to see that it’s not about what you look like but it’s what’s on the inside. You’re either a good person or you’re not; there’s nothing else to it. My Uncle John may look different from everyone else, but he is a goodhearted person. He has shown me that I can’t let other people bring me down, and no one should judge based on outside appearance. I don’t judge books by their covers or by their length. I judge them based on the impact they have on me while reading and after I finish. I no longer judge people based on what they look like or what I have heard about them. I take the chance to find out what’s beneath the exterior. I hope that I can show others that it’s the story that counts, not the cover. |

you can be sure Uncle John and I would have voted many times
