My First Wrestling Tournament
Name: Nicholas Falco
College Attending: East Meadow High School

I woke up to the sound of my dad’s voice saying “Nick you need to wake up, you are going to be late”.  He was talking about me possibly being late for my first wrestling tournament; I was only about eight years old and was in third grade.  I had been wrestling in a kids club since September and it now was December, I was extremely excited and couldn’t wait for my first real wrestling match.  The tournament was at Locust Valley High School which was about a half hour away, and it seemed like the fastest half hour in my life on the way there, and I was overly excited to get started.

As I arrived I weighed in and had breakfast, I was so excited I could barely eat, but I did and after I had to warm up and get ready so that I was ready for my first match.  My first match came up and I was excited and even more so nervous, it was bothering me a little bit but once I stepped onto the mat I was fine and I actually won my first match by a score of 6-2.  Winning that first match was the best feeling ever, I felt like I was on top of the world, nothing I have ever experienced has felt as good as winning that first wrestling match did.  Nothing has compared to the feeling that I experienced after that first win, not even another wrestling match that I have had could compare to this.  For me that was a special moment and I will never forget it, that match has had a huge effect on me.  After that match I won my next two matches and found myself in the finals of my first tournament, it was so exciting and I was the most nervous I had ever been in my life for that finals match.  Because I was so nervous it affected the way I wrestled and I lost my finals match by a score of 7-4, and even though I lost I still placed 2nd and unknowingly found a sport that I would come to love and work hard at throughout young life.  The thing that I did discover about this sport is that you athletic ability certainly helps to be a good wrestler, but how good you become depends on how hard you work and in this sport you control how good you can become, another great thing about this sport is that if you are determined enough you will improve and the sacrifices you make for this sport will pay off, as most hard work often does.

Since I was in third grade and since that first tournament I went to I knew that wrestling was the sport for me, this sport has significantly changed my life, and if I had not started so young, and went to tournaments like the one described above, then I doubt that I would still be wrestling or that I would be the person I am today.  Wrestling has taught me discipline; it has given me a good work ethic, and taught me that if I want something bad enough and if I work hard then there is nothing that can stop me from doing exactly what I want.
