Take Advantage of a Student ID

VolunteeringT

Many students forget that their student ID is a gold mine for savings. In many towns, students get discounts at the movies, stores, museums, play houses, bars and even restaurants.

So encourage your student to take advantage of their student ID and take it everywhere they go!

Here are some ideas to consider that may offer some good deals.

  • Banks: Banks and credit unions today offer student checking accounts which have no minimum balance and no fees.
  • Car Insurance: A student can get a 10% discount with many companies for having good grades. Check with an insurance agent to see what the grade cut off is for your insurance company.
  • Culture: Museums usually offer discounts for students. An recent article stated that a front row seat for a Young Frankenstein exhibit was $25 for students and $450 regular price! An extreme example, but the point is your student can really have a unique and classy experience on a student budget.
  • Local Shops/Restaurants: Typically local establishments around universities offer discounts for students.  The student center typically has a list of local stores and restaurants that offer good deals to students.
  • Movies: Usually movie theaters charge students the matinee price if they have their IDs with them. Some colleges have free or $1 movies on campus.
  • Newspapers/Magazines: Check to see if your child's favorite newspapers/magazines have student discounts for subscriptions.
  • Tech Store: Many universities have a tech store which offers substantial discounts on software and hardware. Your child might want to grab the latest edition right before he/she graduates.

Encourage your child to carry his/her student ID  at all times and make it a habit to ask if a place offers student discounts.
