The Netbook

TIP_Organization_spread As you consider the purchase of gifts for the holidays for your college student, you might want to consider a netbook.

Netbooks are small, internet-ready, low-cost mini laptops intended to be used primarily with basic word processing and spreadsheet programs and internet applications. A netbook typically weighs less than 3 pounds, has a smaller keyboard and screen (7 to 10 inches), a good battery life, and consequently is highly portable, especially around campus. The netbook is not designed to be a primary computer, but perhaps a nice alternative for your student so  they won't have to carry the larger, heavier laptop to the library or to a study group.

Most netbooks do not have DVD or CD drives and are intended for connecting to the internet via built-in ethernet and standard USB connections. The keyboard is exceptionally small, but can be used with a full size external keyboard.

The other big difference between netbooks and notebooks is the price. Netbooks are usually significantly less expensive that notebooks and can be as little as 50% of the price of a basic full sized laptop.
