Before forking over a hefty application fee, wouldn't it be nice to know whether your teen has a chance of getting in to one of the top 80 colleges? Two Harvard alumni has devised a way to find out. |
Grant Ujifusa and Richard Sorenson, dorm mates from college, had an epiphany one day that led to www.ThickEnvelope.com, a Web site that calculates probabilities for admission into 80 of the most competitive universities. Sorensen is a former Assistant Director of Admissions at Harvard with more than 30 years of experience in college admissions work. These qualifications provide confidence in the services offered.
Students, armed with standardized test scores, numerical or percentile class rank, the number of students in your class or your grade point average based on a 4.0 system spend about 15 minutes filling out an online application. After paying $79.95 with a Visa or Mastercard, results are displayed.
The Web site's home page provides some interesting insight into the application process and also provides information on interpreting the results provided. For example:
"Keep in mind that many top colleges admit less than 20% of those applying. So a ThickEnvelope score of, say, 60% would mean that you have a much better than average chance of getting in. A score of 25% or 30% indicates that a particular college might be a reasonable reach."
